Since the release of this new KB4015217 my system has been attempting to install it and it’s failing. This would be Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4015217).
I’ve come down to “the Lab” a couple times this weekend and each time it seems that my system is attempting to install Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4015217). It appears that it is going well then switches to a failed message and tells me that it is restoring to the previous state.
Well, thanks for that.
Took a look at the Windows setting and it seems that everything went fine for many of the previous updates. Just seems to be this one. After coming down to a few failed attempts, it’s time to investigate.
We can see the failure on the 30th. This is the one that keeps trying to install.
I’ve gone ahead and told Windows update to check for updates and download the latest patch. Once it’s downloaded it will unpack it and get the install ready to update in the next window, based on your update settings. You can also force it to install now by clicking on the “Restart Now” button.
If that fails the next step it to try the Windows Update troubleshooter. You can download this from Microsoft.com. Microsoft suggests running this application if you are experiencing trouble with any of its updates on Windows 7, 8 or 10.

There you go. If that doesn’t work then you are shit out of luck. Just kidding 🙂
A couple of other things you can try:
- Stop antivirus and VPN/Proxy software before the update.
- Manually download the updates from Microsoft and apply them
Let me know if any of these workout for you or what eventually did work for you. The Windows Update Troubleshooter worked for me. Happy updating.
